Turnstone Press is pleased to announce Daria Salamon and Rob Krause's latest memoir, Try This at Home, to be released 2025.
From the authors of Don’t Try This at Home: One Family’s (mis)Adventures Around the World comes a timely new foray into green living.
After spending a year travelling around the globe with their two young children, Rob Krause and Daria Salamon decided to set their sights closer to home for their next family adventure, trading their passports and Lonely Planet guides for garden stakes and thrift-store finds in an exploration of sustainable living from their own urban backyard. With their characteristic wit, candour, and joie de vivre, even while in the clutches of a pandemic and its aftermath, Krause and Salamon invite readers into their home for an inspiring first-hand account of their attempt, failure, and attempt again, and again… and again at the 100-mile lifestyle.
Featuring insightful tidbits like "jarred pickled beets will remain untouched, no matter how much Daria tries to sell you on them," and "in some capacity we will have to revert to a hundred-mile diet—which in Manitoba consists of beets, beets, and more beets. And a potato on Sundays," Try This at Home is proof that there’s no place like home ... to hide all your plastic bags.
Daria Salamon’s work has appeared in The New York Times, Washington Post and Prairie Fire Magazine. Daria earned an MFA in writing from UBC and holds degrees in Arts and Education from the U of M and U of W. She loves a good hike and recently lured her family on a 67 km trek around Mount Hood, Oregon. She lives and writes in Winnipeg.
Rob Krause has at one time performed as a zoologist, a lawyer, and a record label owner. He has been published in the Globe and Mail, Winnipeg Free Press, Exclaim, and, of course, The Canadian Journal of Zoology. Rob has hitchhiked across Europe and toured with bands throughout North America. He's been to the highest peaks and the lowest valleys. And that's just with his family when they go to the grocery store.
